Pointe-au-Père National Wildlife Area, National wildlife area in Rimouski, Canada
Pointe-au-Père National Wildlife Area is a protected reserve featuring salt marsh and marine eelgrass beds along the St. Lawrence River in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region. The site spans roughly 23 hectares and provides habitat for more than 120 bird species within their natural setting.
The site was established as a protected sanctuary in 1986 after residents expressed concern about landfill operations threatening the ecological integrity of the area. This conservation effort grew from grassroots determination to safeguard the natural habitat for migratory birds.
The place draws birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts who come to observe and study the diverse bird populations found here. Visitors use the trails to experience wildlife up close, with many traveling specifically to witness migratory flocks during peak seasons.
A designated walking trail of about 500 meters long provides access to observation points with free parking nearby. The path is easy to navigate and the viewing stations are well positioned for watching birds.
Each spring a massive flock of snow geese stops here during their migration along the St. Lawrence River. This period offers visitors the best opportunity to witness the enormous gathering of these white birds.
