Government of Canada Building
Government of Canada Building, Federal heritage building in North York, Canada
The Government of Canada Building features a modernist architectural design at 4900 Yonge Street, housing multiple federal offices across its multi-layered structure.
The building was constructed between 1975 and 1977 as part of a consolidation project to serve residents of North York and Etobicoke districts of Metropolitan Toronto.
Named after Joseph Shepard, an early settler who acquired 400 acres of land in the vicinity, the building represents federal presence in the Greater Toronto Area.
The building contains passport services, Service Canada, Employment and Social Development Canada, Immigration services, and Canadian Forces recruiting facilities for public access.
Architect Macy DuBois created this structure with distinctive layers that differentiate it from the surrounding 1990s office towers in North York.
