Killarney Provincial Park Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Killarney Provincial Park, Canada.
Killarney Provincial Park Observatory is an astronomy facility within the park featuring two buildings equipped with telescopes for viewing and research. Equipment includes a 16-inch automated instrument and a 5-inch refractor telescope for observing celestial objects.
The observatory opened in 2010 to mark 25 years of astronomy education programs within the park. An initial 10-inch Meade telescope served as the first major instrument at the facility.
The observatory buildings carry Indigenous names, Waasa Debaabing and Kchi Waasa Debaabing, honoring how the Anishinaabe people have long observed the sky. These names tie the facility to local traditions and knowledge passed down over time.
The facility offers astronomy programs on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays during summer and fall months when visitors can observe together. Daytime sessions are also available for those interested in viewing the sun safely.
The park office displays a meteorite collection including iron fragments and specimens from the Allende meteorite containing grains formed before our solar system. This allows visitors to see and learn about material that traveled through space.
