Byng Inlet, Natural inlet in Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada.
Byng Inlet is a water passage on the north shore of Georgian Bay where the Magnetawan River flows into Lake Huron. The wide channel connects the inland waterways with the open bay and forms an important water corridor for the region.
The area experienced growth in the 1870s through large-scale logging and sawmill operations that attracted hundreds of workers. This industry shaped settlement development in the surrounding region for several decades.
The inlet bears the name of Royal Navy Admiral John Byng, chosen during Henry Wolsey Bayfield's surveys of Georgian Bay in the early 1800s.
The inlet is easily accessible from inland routes and connects several local communities together. Visitors should be aware that water conditions vary greatly depending on the season.
Two historic lighthouses from 1899 stand at the inlet entrance and still guide boats to this day. The older lighthouse and a skeletal tower together form a rare navigational pair from that era.
