CPR Trestle Bridge, Railway trestle bridge in Parry Sound, Canada
The CPR Trestle Bridge is a railway crossing that spans 517 meters above the terrain at a height of 32 meters. Its steel and concrete frame creates a distinctive latticed structure that defines the landscape view in this part of Ontario.
Built in 1907, this structure served the Canadian Pacific Railway as a vital transport link for opening up northern Ontario to development. Multiple railway crossings had been constructed at this location over time, with this being the third version built at the same site.
The bridge forms part of the John McCutcheon Way, a 2.5-kilometer trail that connects residents with the industrial heritage of Parry Sound.
Visit during daylight hours when structural details are most visible and photography opportunities are best. Multiple trails surround the location offering different viewing angles, so wear comfortable footwear if you plan to explore the surrounding area properly.
The original cut stone foundations date to 1869 and predate the current bridge by nearly 40 years. These early foundations show how railway infrastructure at this strategic location was rebuilt over decades rather than abandoned.
