Saint Joseph Cathedral

Saint Joseph Cathedral is a Roman Catholic place of worship in Rouyn-Noranda featuring a distinctive octagonal bell tower topped with a four-sided roof and a metal Latin cross on Avenue Mercier. The building serves as the spiritual center for the local Catholic community.

The building was constructed between 1946 and 1948 during the postwar expansion of the city and was elevated to episcopal seat of the Diocese of Rouyn-Noranda in 2003. This status change reflected its growing religious significance in the region.

The main altar features black granite from a local quarry, adorned with an artistic representation of the Last Supper crafted by Italian artisans. This religious artwork shapes how visitors experience the sacred space and reflects the care taken in furnishing the sanctuary.

The cathedral's tenor bell, weighing around 2000 kilograms, was sent to Strasbourg, France for restoration after remaining silent for over 50 years. This careful revival of the historic instrument reflects the effort invested in bringing its sound back to the community.
