Archambault Institution, pénitencier canadien
Archambault Institution is a federal prison in Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, Quebec, serving adult men with sentences. The facility is divided into two sections: a medium-security unit with a distinctive circular building design that enables central observation, and a minimum-security area arranged like a residential neighborhood with scattered buildings. The complex also includes a Regional Mental Health Centre and a Reception Centre where new inmates first arrive.
The institution was established as a permanent fixture in Quebec's correctional system and has operated for decades within the federal prison network. The site occupies land traditionally inhabited by the Kanienʼkehá꞉ka (Mohawk), Omàmìwininìwag (Algonquin), and Anishinabewaki peoples long before the facility's construction.
Visitors must submit an application form in advance, with children requiring a special form as well. Visits can be scheduled between 9 to 11:30 in the morning or 1:15 to 3:30 in the afternoon, typically lasting about an hour. Money can only be left in the form of money orders at the visitor desk, never as cash or other payment methods.
The Archambault Institution features a distinctive circular building design in its medium-security section that allows staff to observe the entire area from a central vantage point. This architectural approach enables efficient monitoring while minimizing the number of observation posts needed.
