La Plaine, Administrative sector in Terrebonne, Canada.
La Plaine is a residential sector of Terrebonne, in the Lanaudière region of Quebec, Canada, set on flat land north of the city core. It is made up mostly of newer single-family homes and has a Forum arena, several elementary schools, and a handful of local shops.
The land that makes up La Plaine was farmed for generations as part of a seigneury system that shaped rural Quebec from the 1700s onward. Large-scale residential development only came in the late 20th century, as suburban growth pushed northward from the Montreal area.
La Plaine has a strong suburban character where daily life revolves around family routines, schools, and local sports facilities. The Forum arena is a gathering point for youth hockey and other community activities throughout the year.
La Plaine is easiest to explore by car, as the road network is straightforward and parking is generally available near the main facilities. Winters are long and snowy here, so visitors coming in colder months should dress warmly and allow extra time when moving around.
The long, straight lot lines that run through La Plaine still follow the shape of the old farmland strips laid out under the seigneurial system, and the pattern is visible on maps even today. This gives the street grid a characteristic narrow and elongated look that sets it apart from most North American suburban layouts.
