Poya Bridge, Cable-stayed road bridge in Fribourg, Switzerland.
Poya Bridge is a modern cable-stayed road structure that stretches across the Sarine River for over 800 meters. The structure has two pylons at different heights that support the entire bridge above the valley.
Construction of this bridge began in 2008, though planning had started decades earlier. The opening in 2014 marked the completion of a long effort to improve traffic conditions in the region.
The bridge links different language communities of the region and allows visitors to cross between distinct cultural areas. As you walk or drive across, you notice how the landscape changes beneath you and the towns on each side have their own character.
The bridge has separate lanes for cars, pedestrians, and cyclists, so each group can travel safely. Most vehicles move at about 60 kilometers per hour across it, which creates a comfortable pace for crossing.
The bridge was built with special noise reduction covers to lower the sound for people below and beside it. This environmental approach makes it a rare example of noise protection in bridge construction.
