Brusio spiral viaduct, Railway viaduct in Brusio, Switzerland
The Brusio spiral viaduct is a stone railway bridge with nine arches forming a complete spiral loop. The structure spans 110 meters and guides trains through the mountain terrain with a gentle grade.
Construction began in 1907 and the viaduct opened in 1908 as part of the Bernina railway line. It was built to carry the railway across steep mountain slopes in the Grisons region.
The viaduct is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Albula-Bernina railway line and holds regional cultural property status. Visitors can see how this railway section represents a solution to engineering challenges in mountain territory.
The best views of the viaduct come from the railway line itself or nearby walking trails. Keep in mind that trains run several times daily, and experiencing an actual train journey through the spiral is a special moment.
The viaduct allows trains to travel through a complete spiral loop while gaining 10 meters in elevation with almost no gradient. This spiral solution was an unusual engineering approach when it opened.
