Bisse du Torrent-Neuf, Historical irrigation system in Savièse, Switzerland
The Bisse du Torrent-Neuf is an old irrigation channel with four suspension footbridges crossing deep valleys and gorges. The water follows a narrow path carved into the mountainside.
Engineers built this channel in the 1400s to bring water from the Morge river to farming lands below. It became the backbone of the local agricultural economy for centuries.
The irrigation channel shows how mountain communities organized water sharing for farming and survival. Walking along it today, you see how essential this network was to daily life in the valleys.
The hiking trail begins at Les Biniis around 1000 meters elevation and follows the channel for about nine kilometers across the suspension bridges. You should be comfortable with heights and wear sturdy shoes on this terrain.
Some of the suspension bridges are just one meter wide and hang 76 meters above the gorges below. Walking across them gives you the strange sensation of treading the exact path that water has flowed for centuries.
