Sex Rouge, Mountain summit in Ormont-Dessus, Switzerland.
Sex Rouge is a mountain summit in the Vaudois Alps of Switzerland, sitting at just under 9,747 ft (2,971 m) above sea level, near the municipality of Ormont-Dessus. On its western side the rock drops away steeply, while the view opens toward the Tsanfleuron Glacier and the surrounding high-mountain terrain.
The first lift infrastructure in this area was built in the 1930s, when the ski domain that would become Glacier 3000 was just beginning to take shape. A cable car reached the summit in 1964, opening the peak to visitors who could not make the climb on foot.
The name "Sex Rouge" comes from Patois, the old Franco-Provençal dialect of the region, and simply means "red rock". The reddish tint of the rock face is visible when the light hits the stone walls at the right angle.
The summit is reachable by cable car from Les Diablerets through the Glacier 3000 ski area, so no long hike is required. Summer generally offers more open routes and more stable conditions, while winter sees heavy ski traffic across the area.
A suspension bridge links Sex Rouge to the neighboring peak and crosses directly above the Tsanfleuron Glacier, with the ice sheet visible far below through the open grating. This bridge was completed in 2014 and is considered one of the highest of its kind in the Western Swiss Alps.
