Schlossberg Castle, Medieval castle in La Neuveville, Switzerland.
Schlossberg Castle is a medieval fortress in La Neuveville, Switzerland, perched on a hilltop overlooking the surrounding landscape. The structure features a trapezoidal layout and combines defensive and residential elements typical of fortifications from that period.
The castle was begun in 1283 under Prince-Bishop Henry von Isny and completed in 1288 under Peter Reich von Reichenstein's supervision. After its completion, it played an important role in the power struggles between the Prince-Bishops of Basel and the Counts of Neuchâtel.
The castle's name refers to its position on a hilltop, and it has been shaped by various rulers over centuries. Visitors can see traces of this changing history in the rooms and structures throughout the site.
The castle sits on a hilltop with good views over the town and surrounding areas, so wear sturdy shoes for the climb. A visit is best planned during dry weather to safely navigate the paths and fully enjoy the views.
The castellans received additional rights in 1368 after successfully resisting a Bernese siege. This event marked a turning point in local power structures and strengthened the castle's independence.
