Burg Stein, Medieval castle ruins in Baden, Switzerland
Burg Stein is a medieval castle ruin perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Baden gorge in Aargau. The remaining walls reveal the layout of the fortress and its defensive construction.
The fortress was built before 1000 and passed from the Lenzburg family to the Kyburgs in 1172. The Habsburgs took control in 1264 and maintained it as a seat of power.
The fortress served as a regional seat for the Habsburgs and held administrative authority over the valley below. Its physical presence shaped how people traveled and organized life in this area.
The site is reachable on foot from Baden, though the climb is steep and requires sturdy footwear. The ruins are open to exploration, but caution is needed as the walls are ancient and uneven in places.
The fortress was destroyed by the Swiss Confederation in 1415, yet was partially rebuilt between 1658 and 1670 before final destruction in 1712. This short period of reconstruction makes the ruins a unique record of two different eras.
