The original foundation dates to 1228 when a canons' monastery was established here, lasting until 1870. In 1873 it became a Christian Catholic community after the previous institution was dissolved.
A 17th-century Lenten cloth hangs above the altar during the fasting season, having been rediscovered in the 1990s. The cloth displays religious scenes and marks an important moment in the church's annual rhythm for the community.
