Wildenburg Castle, Medieval castle ruins near Baar, Switzerland
Wildenburg Castle is the ruin of a medieval fortified structure on a hilltop near Baar in Switzerland. The northeastern area still displays a round tower and a residential building surrounded by stone ring walls positioned on elevated ground.
The Lords of Hünenberg founded this castle in the 13th century while serving as vassals to the counts of Kyburg and the House of Habsburg. Its destruction followed the Battle of Sempach in 1386, when the castle's lords found themselves on the defeated side of the conflict.
The name reflects the castle's setting within wild woodland terrain, a characteristic that still shapes how visitors experience the ruins today. The stones themselves tell of a time when local lords held power from this hilltop and exercised authority over the surrounding valleys.
The site offers picnic tables and grilling facilities for visitors who wish to spend time on the grounds. A marked trail connects the parking area to the ruins and provides straightforward access to the location.
After its destruction, the castle's stones were repurposed as building material during the 16th century for other structures in the region. This recycling of materials means that many original elements of the fortification were incorporated into buildings that still stand today.
