Haut Sex, Alpine summit in La Chapelle-d'Abondance, France.
Haut Sex is an alpine summit in La Chapelle-d'Abondance, in the French Alps, sitting just under 2,200 feet (670 m) below the 2,200 m mark. It stands on the edge of the French-Swiss border, surrounded by meadows, forest slopes, and open ridges.
The summit sat along the historic boundary between France and the Duchy of Savoy for centuries before Savoy joined France in 1860. Its position on the ridge made it a natural reference point for those tracing the border on foot.
Local mountain communities maintain traditional alpine practices, organizing regular guided tours and nature observation activities throughout the summer season.
The paths leading to the top are generally accessible from mid-June to mid-September, when snow has melted from the upper sections. Good footwear is recommended, as the terrain becomes rockier on the final stretch.
The word "Sex" in the name comes from the local Patois dialect, a form of Franco-Provençal, where it simply means "rock". The same root appears in several other place names across the Chablais and Lake Geneva area.
