Niederriedsee, body of water
Niederriedsee is a reservoir in Canton Bern created by a dam on the Aar River, surrounded by fields and patches of forest. The water body covers about 154 hectares with a maximum depth of roughly 8 meters (26 feet), and its calm surface often mirrors the sky and the surrounding landscape.
The lake was created over 100 years ago with the construction of a dam in 1913 to supply water for a hydroelectric power plant in Kallnach. The structure was upgraded in 1963 to improve electricity generation at the Niederried-Radelfingen power station and enhance water management in the region.
The lake holds importance for local communities as a quiet place to spend time outdoors and connect with nature. Families and walkers regularly visit the shoreline to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and observe the wildlife that lives here year-round.
The lake is easily accessible from nearby towns and villages, making it convenient for shoreline walks and birdwatching activities. The area is relatively flat and open, which keeps walking straightforward, and the quiet surroundings away from major roads mean you can enjoy a peaceful visit.
The site is recognized as a Ramsar wetland and shelters around 10.000 waterbirds in winter, including many species listed as threatened or endangered. With eight vulnerable plant species and 77 at-risk animal species, this location holds national importance for conservation.
