Liebburg, Cultural heritage site in Lengwil, Switzerland.
Liebburg is a three-story rectangular building with battlements and a stepped gable above the central axis of its long sides. The castle sits at 499 meters elevation near Lengwil in Thurgau and has been privately owned by the Kolb family since 1970.
In 1476, Bishop Otto IV of Sonnenberg granted the property to Ulrich Blarer, the wealthy mayor of Constance. The comprehensive redesign with its new facade occurred around 1899 following the transition to private ownership.
The castle displays the design language of its 1899 renovation with stepped gables and tower-like features that define its appearance today. These architectural elements shape how the building reads as a landmark in the regional landscape.
The castle sits on elevated ground and is visible from outside as you walk or pass through the area. Visitors should know it is private property and can only be viewed from the exterior.
Until 1940, a farm stood northwest of the main building as part of the estate before the complex became purely residential. This shift marked the transition from a working agricultural property to a residential castle.
