Seeburg Kreuzlingen, Medieval castle in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland.
Seeburg Kreuzlingen is a medieval castle set on a rise just above the shore of Lake Constance in the Swiss canton of Thurgau. The complex is made up of several buildings with towers and stone walls from different periods of construction, all grouped together on the same site.
The origins of Seeburg go back to the 8th century, and in the 11th century the site was rebuilt and expanded in a significant way. Further changes came during the late medieval period as the castle passed through different owners and took on different roles.
The castle sits right on the shore of Lake Constance and is a place many locals visit for a walk or a meal at the restaurant on the grounds. It feels like a natural part of the town's waterfront rather than a purely historical monument.
The site can be reached on foot along the lakeshore, and parts of the grounds are open to walk around freely. A restaurant on site gives you a place to stop and take in the view over Lake Constance during your visit.
A restoration carried out in the 1920s by German architect Paul Schultze-Naumburg added neo-Gothic touches that now define much of the castle's outer appearance. Visitors who look closely can notice details that belong to early 20th century design rather than to the medieval original.
