Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe, Public transport company in Berlin, Germany
Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe runs underground trains, trams, and buses across the German capital, connecting residential areas with business centers and attractions. The system includes nine underground lines, 22 tram routes, and 149 bus services that spread across the entire city.
The company formed in 1929 through the merger of several transport operators in Berlin. After the city split, East and West ran separate services until they rejoined as one organization in 1992.
The yellow-and-white vehicles appear on souvenirs, postcards, and in local stories as recognizable symbols of the city. Many Berliners know their regular routes by heart and use the connections as landmarks in daily life.
Tickets are valid for all modes of transport within the chosen fare zones and can be purchased at machines or through an app. Travelers should validate tickets before boarding, as inspections occur regularly throughout the day.
Around 240 different professions work within the organization, from drivers and technicians to infrastructure specialists. Staff from 55 nations mirror the international makeup of the city itself.
