SAP Arena, Multi-purpose sports arena in Mannheim, Germany
SAP Arena is a multi-purpose hall in Mannheim that hosts concerts, sporting events and other large gatherings. The building covers a large footprint and accommodates thousands of spectators, who sit on movable stands or fixed seating rows depending on the occasion.
Construction began in late 2002 and was completed by autumn 2005, after the project received substantial funding from public and private sources. The opening provided the city with a modern event venue that quickly became a hub for sport and entertainment in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan area.
The building takes its name from a software company based in Walldorf and serves as the home ground for two major regional sports clubs. Throughout the season, ice hockey evenings and handball matches draw devoted crowds who fill the stands with chants and banners.
The hall sits in the Neckarau district and is reachable via tram line 6 from central Mannheim. Parking is available around the site, though heavier traffic can be expected on match days or concert evenings.
In January 2018 the building became the first of its kind in Germany to introduce an indoor navigation system, helping visitors find seats and service areas more easily. This technology was later also used to deliver targeted advertising offers through mobile devices.
