The 16-hectare Zoologischer Garten Magdeburg displays 1,400 animals from 210 species across specialized habitats, including a large African savannah landscape and primate enclosures.
Established in 1950 by ornithologist Alfred Hilprecht, the zoo expanded to 20 hectares by 1959 and received its first Asian elephant in 1960.
The zoo maintains 46 European conservation breeding programs, including efforts to protect the Socorro dove, which remains at only 100 individuals worldwide.
The facility operates daily from 9 AM to 4 PM with adult tickets at 15 euros, while children under 15 enter free when accompanied by adults.
The Madagascar exhibit, completed in 2014 through public donations, spans 800 square meters and houses multiple lemur species in naturalistic environments.
