Laim, Residential borough in western Munich, Germany
Laim is a residential neighborhood in western Munich stretching between Landsberger Strasse and Westpark. The district mixes residential buildings from different periods with industrial structures and is served by the U5 line at Laimer Platz station.
The neighborhood originated from medieval clay extraction and later developed around Munich's main freight terminal. The railway infrastructure transformed the area in the 19th century from a mining location into a residential and workers' settlement.
The neighborhood's name derives from clay extraction activities that shaped its early identity, and this heritage remains visible in how the district is organized today. Walking through the area, one can notice how the landscape and buildings reflect this industrial past.
The neighborhood sits directly on S-Bahn and U5 subway lines, making the city center easily accessible. One can explore the area comfortably by bike and finds parks and green spaces throughout for walking.
The former horse racing track in the neighborhood was repurposed over time, with its structures now appearing in local restaurants and venues. This transformation shows how the place continually reinvented itself.
