Erding Air Base, disused air base in Germany
Erding Air Base is a former military airfield in the town of Erding featuring large runways, hangars, and flight operations buildings spread across the landscape. The facility consists of practical concrete structures and metal buildings that date from its days as an active base during the mid-20th century.
The facility served as a training ground for Luftwaffe pilots before and during World War II and was taken over by the United States in 1945. In December 1957, control returned to the newly formed West German Air Force, which operated the site until activity was reduced later in the century.
The site can be explored on foot or by bicycle, with open areas around the runways accessible to visitors. Its location near the town of Erding and other nearby facilities makes it easy to combine a visit with other local activities.
The grounds hosted motorsport events in the 1980s, including Formula 3 racing, with the circuit measuring about 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) in length. This unexpected use of the former airfield shows how the site reinvented itself after its military years.
