Hohenhewen

Hohenhewen rises to 843.7 meters above sea level, forming a prominent peak in the Hegau region with basalt rock formations and steep eastern mountainsides.

The medieval castle ruins at the summit, dating from 1050 AD, served as a fortress for the Counts of Lupfen-Stühlingen who controlled merchant routes through the region.

The name Hohenhewen derives from Celtic origins, where 'ceven' denotes a domed mountain, and this terminology influenced the naming of the entire Hegau region.

Two primary ascending routes lead to the summit: a wider, gentler path from Anselfingen in the north and a steeper trail from Welschingen in the south.

The observation platform built upon the former bergfried provides views extending to Lake Constance, the Alps, and the Black Forest under clear weather conditions.
