Ruine Hohenhewen, Medieval castle ruin on Hohenhewen mountain near Engen, Germany.

Ruine Hohenhewen is a castle ruin sitting on an 846-meter volcanic hill near Engen with preserved stone walls, an observation tower, and visible foundations. The site is accessed on foot and offers views across the Hegau region, Lake Constance, and the Alps.

The fortress was built between 1100 and 1170 by the Lords of Engen-Hewen to protect important regional trade routes. Bavarian forces destroyed it by fire in 1639, ending its role as a seat of power.

The site takes its name from the hill it crowns, and the ruins show how castles once served as symbols of power placed prominently across the landscape. Visitors can still observe the heavy stone structures that once demonstrated control over the region.

The hike from Anselfingen takes about 45 minutes on foot, and free parking is available at Almenhütte. Entry to the ruins is free, and grilling areas on the grounds allow visitors to prepare meals during their visit.

The site allows visitors to grill and picnic at a location where nobles once demonstrated their power, giving the experience an unusual personal dimension. This blend of history and everyday leisure makes it different from typical ruin visits.
