Ruine Hohenhewen, Medieval castle ruin on Hohenhewen mountain near Engen, Germany.
The stone remains of the fortress sit atop an 846-meter volcanic hill, offering views across the Hegau region toward Lake Constance and the Alps.
Built between 1100 and 1170 by the Lords of Engen-Hewen, the castle controlled regional trade routes until Bavarian forces burned it down in 1639.
The ruins represent a significant period of medieval German architecture and demonstrate the defensive building techniques used by nobles in Baden-Württemberg.
Visitors can access the site through a 45-minute hike from Anselfingen, with free parking available at Almenhütte and no entrance fee to the ruins.
The castle grounds include preserved wall foundations, an observation tower, and designated grilling areas where visitors can prepare meals while examining the ruins.
