Mansfeld

Mansfeld is a medieval municipality in Saxony-Anhalt situated on a hilltop near the Harz region. The townscape is defined by a castle complex that overlooks former copper mining areas.

The ruling family established control over the region in the 10th century, while the castle itself was founded in the late 11th century. These early structures formed the foundation for the settlement's medieval development.

The town is closely tied to Martin Luther, who attended school here from 1488 to 1496, and whose family home now serves as a museum open to visitors. This connection shapes how the community sees itself today.

The place is accessible via the Mansfeldbahn railway line, which connects Klostermansfeld and Wippra through the mountainous landscape. The train journey itself offers views of the hilly terrain and former mining areas.

A fountain in the town displays the only statue of Martin Luther as a child, surrounded by reliefs from his life story. This unusual depiction shows the Reformer in a rarely portrayed phase of his biography.
