Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld, Football Stadium
The Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld is a sports complex in Jena with a main stadium for football matches and a running track surrounding the pitch. The facility includes six grass fields inside the stadium, two additional practice fields at the nearby Jahnwiese, and three tennis courts.
The stadium opened in 1924 and became the home of local football in Jena for decades. In 1939 it was named after Ernst Abbe, and in 1962 more than 27,000 spectators packed in for a European Cup match, far exceeding its official capacity at the time.
The stadium bears the name of Ernst Abbe, a physicist and social reformer whose legacy shaped Jena. It has served as a gathering place for football fans and local sports enthusiasts for more than a century.
The complex is located on Roland-Ducke-Weg and is easily reached by car or public transport. The grounds are well maintained with green grass year-round, and visitors will find clean and functional sports facilities whenever they come.
In 1978, the first electronic scoreboard of its kind in East Germany was installed here to display match scores and game information. A world javelin throw record was set here in 1996 by Jan Zeleznys that remains celebrated today.
