Hemmingen, town in Lower Saxony, Germany
Hemmingen is an urban municipality in the Hannover region with around 19,500 residents spread across seven districts. The terrain is flat and surrounded by green spaces, with forests, parks, and lakes that shape the landscape.
The place is first mentioned in 1124 and was once known by names like Hemmege. A Roman camp from the 1st century AD was discovered in 2015, showing that people were active here in ancient times.
The town grew from seven communities that merged in 1974, and this joining still shapes how people live here today. In different districts like Arnum and Westerfeld, you can see how each area kept its own character while becoming part of a single town.
The town is well connected by public transport, with the city train line 13 running through it since 2023 and linking it directly to Hannover. A broad network of bus lines and bike paths makes it easy to get around and explore the area.
A complete Roman soldiers' camp from the 1st century was discovered here, the first known marching camp of its kind in Lower Saxony. Archaeological digs have uncovered coins, tools, and other objects showing how Roman troops once used this site.
