Backnanger Stadthaus, Cultural heritage monument in Backnang, Germany
The Backnanger Stadthaus is a three-story timber-framed building on Marktstrasse featuring a distinctive hip roof and traditional elements from multiple construction periods. The facade displays the typical structure of old townhouses with visible timber framing and crafted details.
The house was built in 1625 and after a city fire in 1693 was reconstructed between 1698 and 1699, with a new roof added later. In the 19th century it served as a post office building and lost this role during the 20th century.
The building defines the townscape with its distinctive timber-framing style and distinctive roof shape that visitors immediately notice in the old town. It represents the connection between the town and its past as an important administrative center.
The building is centrally located in the old town and easily visible from the street, though normally closed to public access. Visitors can admire the architecture from outside and photograph the timber framing and roof details.
The roof was reshaped into its current hip roof form only in 1785, showing a later craftsman's intervention in the original building. This change documents how owners adapted the structure to changing needs.
