Badewelt Waikiki, Tropical water facility in Zeulenroda-Triebes, Germany
Badewelt Waikiki was a tropical-themed swimming complex in Zeulenroda-Triebes in Thuringia. The facility contained multiple pools, a water grotto, waterfall feature, and massage area spread across its grounds.
This was Europe's first Hawaiian-themed water recreation center when it opened and brought a novel leisure concept to the region. Operations ended in January 2023 after years of serving visitors.
The facility drew on Hawaiian design and created a tropical setting where visitors could experience elements of island culture within a German spa context. The visual style and naming connected guests to a faraway place through architecture and decoration.
The facility was covered with a retractable glass dome that could open during good weather. Different areas accommodated various visitors, from lap swimming to relaxation zones.
The retractable glass dome could fully open during favorable weather and transform the covered tropical setting into an open-air experience. This created a rare feature that combined indoor and outdoor swimming in one location.
