Barneführer Holz und Schreensmoor, Nature reserve in Hatten, Wardenburg and Großenkneten, Germany.
Barneführer Holz und Schreensmoor is a nature reserve in the Hunte River valley with forests, moorland, and wetland habitats across several municipalities. The protected area covers roughly 240 hectares with mixed woodland types including alder, birch, and spruce stands.
The forest name comes from the 14th century Bernefuer noble family who held land in the Wardenburg region. Protection as a nature reserve developed gradually during the 20th century to safeguard these important ecosystems.
The reserve combines environmental protection with recreational activities through a network of marked forest trails and walking paths.
This area is best explored on foot using the network of marked forest trails and walking paths throughout the reserve. Entry points are accessible at Huntloser Straße and Hansberg bridge, both with parking areas nearby.
Beside a forest cabin stands a Douglas fir planted in the 1840s, one of Germany's oldest specimens of its kind. This tree was officially designated a natural monument in 2000 and quietly marks two centuries of growth.
