Hexenstein

The Hexenstein is a glacial erratic in Neerstedt, Lower Saxony, transported here by glaciers from Scandinavia. The rock formation consists of several large stone blocks that have come to rest together in a meadow over time.

Archaeologists discovered cup marks and signs on the surface dating from the Neolithic period. The stone formation likely served as a burial site and ritual place for early settlers in the region.

The name refers to local legends in which witches and supernatural beings played a role. Visitors find information boards explaining how people in the region interpreted and used such stones over centuries.

The path to the monument leads through open terrain and is easy to walk in dry weather. Those who want to examine the stones more closely should plan some time to explore the surroundings.

The surface shows traces of the Ice Age, including scratches and grooves created by rock fragments carried in the glacier. These features allow specialists to reconstruct the direction of ice movement.
