Lindau Abbey, Monastery in Lindau, Germany
The Lindau Abbey stands on an island in Lake Constance, featuring residential buildings and a church with Baroque ceiling paintings and decorative elements.
The religious community, established around 822 by Count Adelbert of Raetia, received Imperial status in 1466 and continued operations until dissolution in 1802.
The church structure, rebuilt after a fire in 1728, displays the architectural expertise of Giovanni Gaspare Bagnato through its Baroque and Rococo interior design.
The former abbey buildings now serve as local government offices, while the church remains an active Roman Catholic minster dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
During the Protestant Reformation period, this religious establishment maintained its Catholic identity, distinguishing itself from other institutions in the region.
