Brodauer Mühle, Dutch windmill in Schashagen, Germany
The Brodauer Mühle is a mill built on an octagonal brick base with a thatched roof and metal-covered cap, situated near route B501. Today the structure shows mainly its foundational elements, as a fire in November 2005 left only the brick walls and wooden beams of the mill body.
This mill was built in 1864 by mill builder Carl Friedrich Trahn from Neustadt in Holstein as a grain mill. It operated for more than a century, functioning as a mill until 1960 and later serving as a restaurant before the 2005 fire.
The mill holds deep meaning for local identity, appearing on the coat of arms of Schashagen municipality. This reflects how much the structure represents the community's heritage and pride.
The site is relatively easy to reach, located near route B501 and accessible by car. Visitors should know that the structure today exists only as a ruin, so viewing is mainly from the outside, and there are no facilities or shelter at the location.
A legal dispute arose between the owners and the State Office for Monument Protection over unauthorized changes made to the mill's gallery structure. This conflict highlights the tension between private ownership rights and the protection of historical buildings.
