Westpark, Public park in Sendling-Westpark, Germany
Westpark is a green space in Sendling-Westpark that stretches several kilometers from east to west and is divided by a road. A pedestrian bridge connects both halves and allows passage between the different areas with lakes, meadows and pathways.
The site was laid out for an international garden exhibition in 1983 after earth was moved to create the present form. The area had been largely undeveloped before and was turned into a landscaped park with water surfaces and low hills.
Several sections display structures and plantings from Thailand, China, Japan and Nepal, each shaped by craftspeople from those countries. The Nepal tower took form through carvers who used traditional techniques and worked the wood on site.
Visitors can use playgrounds, sports areas and barbecue spots as well as cycle through the park on dedicated paths. Two beer gardens and a cafe by the shore of Mollsee offer rest and refreshment options for all ages.
A water circuit uses groundwater pumped through a sculpture in the western lake that supplies the other water features throughout the park. After flowing through ponds and streams the water is cleaned in a facility and returned.
