Börneplatzsynagoge, Renaissance Revival synagogue in Börneplatz, Frankfurt, Germany
The synagogue featured red Main sandstone construction with a single-nave hall accommodating 520 men's seats and 360 women's seats on the gallery level.
Built between 1881 and 1882 under architect Siegfried Kusnitzky's design, the synagogue served as the Orthodox Jewish congregation's central place of worship until 1938.
The square's name honors Ludwig Börne, a Frankfurt-born Jewish writer and democratic advocate who represented German-Jewish intellectual life in the early 1800s.
The site's foundations, discovered during excavations from 1987 to 1990, are now marked with ground indicators and a memorial plaque at New Börneplatz.
The synagogue underwent an expansion in 1901 by architect Fritz Epstein, increasing its capacity to 1,300 worshippers before its destruction in November 1938.
