Bronnbach, Cistercian monastery in Reicholzheim, Germany
Bronnbach is a former Cistercian monastery set in the Tauber river valley near Wertheim, built in a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The complex includes a church, cloister, orangery, and several outbuildings added across different centuries.
The monastery was founded in 1151 and soon relocated to its current position beside the Tauber river. It remained an active Cistercian house until the early 19th century, when it was dissolved during secularization.
The monastery shaped life in this river valley for centuries and shows how monks made use of the water and surrounding land. Visitors today can still experience rooms that tell the story of monastic daily life.
The site is easy to walk around, with the church, cloister, and orangery forming the main areas to visit. Allow at least a few hours to move through the buildings and garden without rushing.
The monastery orangery carries a large outdoor fresco from the 1770s depicting the four seasons across its facade. This makes it one of the largest outdoor fresco programs north of the Alps.
