Burg Anstel

Burg Anstel is a moated castle complex in Rommerskirchen with a rectangular layout centered on a residential tower featuring sandstone-framed windows. The tower's mansard roof defines the building's appearance, while water ditches surround the entire structure.

This castle was first documented in 1155 when Sigefridus de Anstele was recorded as its owner. From 1209 onwards, the Knights of Anstel family controlled the fortress and shaped its development.

The coat of arms stone at the entrance is dated 1722 and shows how the original fortress was transformed into a baroque residence. This marker tells of a period when the complex underwent a major change in appearance and use.

The grounds now function as an active farm and equestrian center with stables, an indoor riding arena, and riding fields. Keep in mind this is a working facility, so visitor access may be limited or require advance notice.

A brick bridge connects the castle courtyard to the main fortress across the moat, suggesting a drawbridge once stood here. This structure reveals how the defensive system operated in earlier times.
