Are Castle

Are Castle is a fortified settlement on a steep hillside near Altenahr overlooking the Ahr valley. The site contains stone walls and tower remains that stand on an elevated ridge commanding views across the surrounding area.

The castle originated around 1100 as a defensive fortification controlling the region below. Its hilltop position allowed inhabitants to monitor movement along trade routes and protect settlements in the river valley.

The castle shows how medieval inhabitants combined living space with protection in one fortified location. Visitors can still observe the layout of rooms and understand why the hilltop position mattered to those who lived there.

The path to the castle follows marked hiking trails starting from Altenahr and takes between 30 and 45 minutes on foot. The terrain is uneven with rocks and steep sections, so sturdy footwear is essential.
