Burg Arnsberg

Burg Arnsberg is a stone fortress standing on elevated ground near Kipfenberg, featuring defensive walls, towers, and architectural elements from different centuries. The complex spreads across multiple levels with residential areas, a courtyard, and fortifications that overlook the valley below.

The fortress originated in the 12th century as a strategic stronghold for local nobles who controlled important trade routes through Bavaria. Over generations, the complex was reinforced and rebuilt to defend against changing military threats.

The castle displays exhibitions about medieval life, regional rule, and how German fortifications developed over time. The rooms give a sense of how people lived then and how the fortress controlled its surroundings.

The fortress is open daily from April through October, with guided tours available in German and English by reservation. The walk up to the site is partly steep, so visitors should wear comfortable shoes and exercise caution in wet weather.

The arrow slits and watchtower remain in their original form, showing how medieval defenders spotted and monitored activity in the valley below. This vantage point allowed those in charge to watch over merchant caravans passing through the region, revealing the fortress's role in controlling trade.
