Arnsberger Leite, Nature reserve in Kipfenberg, Germany
Arnsberger Leite is a protected area near Kipfenberg featuring steep hillsides with dolomite rock outcrops and scattered forest across roughly 20 hectares. The Altmühltal-Panoramaweg trail runs through the reserve, offering access to its varied terrain.
The area became protected in 1986 to preserve its distinctive plant and animal communities. A cave within the reserve reveals a much longer timeline, with evidence of human activity spanning from the Bronze Age through the Roman period.
The name refers to the steep slopes that define this landscape and become apparent as visitors walk through the terrain. The grazing herd here year-round demonstrates how traditional land management and nature protection work together in this setting.
The Altmühltal-Panoramaweg trail is well-marked and accessible via self-closing gates throughout the reserve. The steep slopes and rocky ground require sturdy footwear, and caution should be taken when the terrain is wet.
Angora goats graze year-round on the steep, rocky slopes and play an essential role in maintaining the landscape. This traditional grazing method has proven effective in keeping the hillsides open and walkable.
