Schlossturm Auerbach

Schlossturm Auerbach is a 43-meter-high stone tower with massive walls measuring 3.5 meters thick at the base. The walls taper toward the top to 1.1 meters thick, demonstrating the robust construction typical of medieval defense structures.

The tower originated in the 12th century as part of a larger castle complex and first appeared in documents in 1348 under the name Castrum Urbach. This early documentation reveals that the fortification had already been in use for four centuries before being recorded in writing.

The tower has shaped Auerbach's skyline for centuries and serves as a landmark that visitors recognize from afar. Local people use it as a natural meeting point and reference for finding their way around the city.

A narrow spiral staircase with 179 steps leads to the top and has been open to visitors since 1850. Wear comfortable shoes before climbing, as the stairs are steep and tight.

A stone marker at the tower base signals the start of the Mars-Weg, a hiking trail that guides visitors toward the Rodewisch Planetarium. This surprising connection links medieval history with modern astronomy and creates an intriguing path for curious walkers.
