Bundeskanzleramt Bonn, Federal government building in Gronau, Germany
Bundeskanzleramt Bonn is a federal government building located in the Gronau district of Bonn, Germany. The modernist complex spans more than ten hectares and features two interior courtyards along with dark bronze aluminum curtain walls.
From 1976 to 1999, the complex served as the central administrative office for German chancellors Helmut Schmidt, Helmut Kohl, and Gerhard Schröder. After the government relocated to Berlin, the building became the second official seat of the Federal Chancellery.
The entrance hall displays Henry Moore's bronze sculpture 'Large Two Forms', while the international conference room features glass kinetics by Adolf Luther. These artworks were selected to represent modern German culture during the Bonn Republic era.
The structure contains three floors above ground and two bomb-proof basement levels, housing offices and meeting spaces for government operations. Visitors should note that this is an active administrative building and is not normally open to the public.
The architectural design draws inspiration from Japanese spatial concepts, with room proportions based on tatami mat measurements. This unconventional design choice reflects the openness of postwar German architecture to international influences.
