Burg Kemnat

Burg Kemnat is a medieval fortification in Kaufbeuren situated on a rocky promontory with steep slopes descending to the north and east. A distinctive tower built from massive stone blocks rises approximately 23 meters and forms the most visible element of the structure.

The castle was founded around 1185 by Volkmar and Markward von Apfeltrang, servants of the Counts of Ronsberg, and became the center of the lordship Grosskemnat. It developed as a significant power base during the medieval period in the region.

The castle served as a gathering place for local nobles and artists during the high Middle Ages under Volkmar II von Kemnat. Visitors today can sense how such fortified seats functioned as centers of power and learning in medieval society.

The grounds are now used for open-air theatrical performances and events, with a theater barn managed by a local association. Visitors should note that the site remains active for cultural programming, so access may vary depending on scheduled activities.

The castle's name comes from the Latin word 'caminata,' referring to a heated chamber or building. This unusual naming reveals that the medieval site was distinguished by relatively comfortable living conditions compared to other fortifications of its time.
