Burg Kemnat, Medieval castle in Kaufbeuren, Germany
The castle stands on a promontory with steep slopes to the north and east, featuring a 23-meter-high tower constructed from large conglomerate blocks.
Built around 1185 by Volkmar and Markward von Apfeltrang, servants of the Counts of Ronsberg, the castle became the seat of medieval lordship Grosskemnat.
Under Volkmar II von Kemnat, known as 'the Wise' and bailiff of Konstanz, the castle developed into a center of medieval art during the high Middle Ages.
The castle grounds currently serve as a venue for open-air theater performances and include a theater barn managed by a local association.
The castle's name derives from the Latin word 'caminata,' which refers to a heatable chamber or building.
