Kaufbeuren

Kaufbeuren is an independent town in Swabia and sits along the Wertach river between hills and fields. The old center shows houses with timber framing and plastered facades, while the surrounding districts consist of residential neighborhoods and green spaces.

The settlement received town rights in the 13th century and grew into an important trading hub in the Allgäu region. After the war, the former military grounds were converted to civilian use and now shape parts of the townscape.

The name Kaufbeuren points to its role as a trading place along the Wertach river, where merchants conducted their business for centuries. This heritage shows in the markets and shops throughout the old town, where locals still do their shopping along narrow lanes and open squares.

The old town is best explored on foot, with most points of interest within walking distance of each other. Visitors find plenty of signage in the center and can orient themselves using prominent towers.

The annual children's festival brings together over 1600 costumed participants who parade through the streets. The procession shows historical scenes from the town's past, while spectators along the route watch the performances.
