Burg Kipfenberg, Medieval castle and archaeological site in Kipfenberg, Germany.
Burg Kipfenberg is a medieval castle set on a dolomite rock above the Altmühl valley in Bavaria. The site includes a Romanesque keep, a Gothic chapel, a tower known as the witch tower, and a set of defensive walls that together form the main structure.
The castle was founded in the late 12th century by the Kropf family, who sold it to the Hochstift Eichstätt in 1301. It went through the Peasants' War and the Thirty Years' War without being destroyed.
The Roman and Bajuwaren Museum in the outer bailey displays objects from ancient times and the early Middle Ages, giving visitors a direct look at daily life in this part of the Altmühl valley. The collection covers tools, weapons, and everyday items found in the surrounding area.
The castle can only be reached on foot, and the path up the hill is steep enough to require sturdy footwear. Once at the top, a cafe on the grounds offers a place to rest before or after exploring the interior spaces.
The castle stands close to the geographical center of Bavaria, a fact that gives it a symbolic position within the region. Much of what visitors see today was rebuilt during a thorough restoration carried out in the early 20th century.
