Burg Weißenstein

The medieval fortress stands on a 250-meter sandstone hill north of Wehrda, overlooking the Lahntal valley with remaining wall structures spanning 620 square meters.

Construction began between the 8th and 9th centuries with a square building, followed by expansions including curtain walls and a residential tower in the 11th century.

The castle exemplifies medieval German defensive architecture with its strategic position, pentagonal tower design, and traditional building methods using local sandstone materials.

The castle ruins remain open to visitors throughout the year, with access routes leading up the northern side of the hill to explore the structural remnants.

Archaeological findings indicate the site experienced a destructive fire in the late 11th century, with no evidence of subsequent occupation after approximately 1100.
