Burg Weißenstein

Burg Weißenstein is a castle ruin on a sandstone hill north of Wehrda with preserved wall sections indicating different building phases. The structures show features from multiple construction periods spanning its early years through its abandonment in the High Middle Ages.

The fortress originated between the 8th and 9th centuries as a simple square building and was later expanded with curtain walls and a residential tower. A major fire destroyed much of the site in the late 11th century, leading to its final abandonment.

This site reflects medieval defensive methods through its still-visible walls and commanding hilltop location. Visitors can understand how such fortifications controlled the valley and served as regional power symbols.

The site is open to visitors year-round, with walking routes leading up the hill and offering various viewing points. The best light for exploring and photography occurs in early morning or late afternoon when the sun shines from favorable angles.

Archaeological evidence suggests a devastating fire in the late 11th century destroyed much of the structures here. This fire left burn marks that researchers still examine in the ruins today, documenting what happened at this location.
