Burg Wertheim, Medieval castle ruins in Wertheim, Germany
Burg Wertheim sits on a ridge between the Main and Tauber river valleys, displaying remnants from different periods of its occupation. A prominent tower reaching about 25 meters (82 feet) and palace ruins remain visible, showing how the site combined living quarters with defensive structures.
The fortress was first recorded in 1183 and served the Counts of Wertheim as their seat and stronghold for many generations. During the Thirty Years' War, Swedish forces dealt significant damage from which the castle never fully recovered.
The castle was home to the Counts of Wertheim for centuries and shaped regional life through their rule and influence. Today visitors can experience how noble families lived and governed within these walls.
The site is accessible via hiking trails and offers sweeping views across the valleys and town below from the upper levels. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the ground is uneven in places and stairs connect different levels of the ruins.
The octagonal stair tower was built in 1562 as one of the last major construction projects before the castle's gradual decline. This tower shows that the counts were still investing in new structures even as the castle's importance was fading.
